On the Easel:
Here's an in-progress painting of my son. I'm working from photographs, which is my usual practice. I usually do portraits in oil, on stretched canvas, life-size or as near to life-size as possible. To begin, I do several thumbnails for tonal studies and composition choices. The first figure is a grayscale sketch, the second is a tonal underpainting and the third is a change in subject placement with additional underpainting glazes. The images below show the continuing progress.
